In the 2s class the children are offered opportunities to learn through play and structured activities. Our goal is to challenge and guide the children to develop physically, emotionally, cognitively, independently and socially through a mix of individualized, teacher directed and small group learning experiences and activities.
We want to make the children feel comfortable in their classroom environment, to provide a place they feel safe and happy, a place they want to come to have fun, to play and learn, a place where social interaction is a priority. The development of the children's social/emotional skills is an important part of our curriculum. The nurturing environment and play will help in developing good verbal, sharing and listening skills.
A theme based curriculum is offered throughout the year. The children learn about "ME", My family, My school, and Growing and Changing. Other units will focus on Animals, Birds, Bugs, Forest, Jungle, Farm and Ocean Life. Our curriculum also includes Holidays: Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Valentine's Day and Easter. The Curriculum themes are introduced through different activities: Music and Literature, Art projects, Play Centers and Creative Play, and through Cooking and Conversation.
An ongoing learning experience is the learning of concepts such as color recognition, identification of shapes and sizes, learning about patterns, sorting and sequencing through simple games. We also talk about the different seasons and the weather.
Fine motor skills are strengthened through coloring, painting, cutting, gluing, play dough, and puzzle play. They also enjoy the water, sand or rice tables.
The classroom is made up of Play Centers; the children can choose to play with dolls, dress-up, "cooking" in the play kitchen, blocks and building, cars and trains, library, puppet theater, easel painting or table activities. Depending on the unit we are currently working on, a "special" center may be introduced.
During our daily music and story time the children will work on improving their attention span and developing good listening skills. It's a special time to listen to a story, share finger plays, learn songs and explore music through movement, games, and rhythm instruments.
In the 2s we love to bake and cook. This activity is mostly teacher directed, but the children learn about recipes and ingredients. They learn to sift, measure, stir, knead, shape and bake as we create delicious loaves of breads, muffins, cookies, pudding, jello, porridge, and applesauce!
Every day we play outside on the playground or inside in the big room, where we have bikes, balls, climbing equipment, slides, large building blocks, balancing toys, mats, a large parachute, and a soccer goal! There are lots of opportunities to work on large motor skills.
We recognize that every child is different and special, and every child develops at a different rate. Each has strengths and needs that are unique to that child. We strive to meet every child's needs and to help him or her grow and blossom in our care.
A Parent/Teacher Conversation will take place in late May. However, any questions or concerns you may have during your child's school year will be addressed as needed.
